HARDWARE

The WRT54G is famous for being the first consumer-level network device that had its firmware source code released to satisfy the obligations of the GNU GPL. This allows programming enthusiasts to modify the firmware to change or add functionality to the device. Several development projects have been started to provide the public with enhanced firmware for the WRT54G. See Third party firmware projects. Later revisions increased the CPU speed to 200 MHz (216 MHz on version 3.1). Both the RAM and flash memory were doubled to 32 MB and 8 MB, respectively, in the WRT54GS, although both quantities were reduced again in later models. All models come standard with a 4+1 ports network switch (the Internet/WAN port is also in the same switch, but on a different VLAN) and a wireless chipset by Broadcom which provides Wi-Fi connectivity. The devices have two removable antennas connected through Reverse Polarity TNC connectors.

SOFTWARE

DD-WRT is a free firmware for several wireless routers, most notably the Linksys WRT54G, that run minimalist Linux-based operating systems. DD-WRT is maintained by BrainSlayer at dd-wrt.com. DD-WRT up to v22 (current version is v23 SP1) was based on the Alchemy firmware from Sveasoft, and Alchemy is based on the original Linksys firmware. DD-WRT and Alchemy also include other open source projects. Among other features not found in the original Linksys firmware, DD-WRT adds the Kai Console Gaming network daemon, IPv6, Wireless Distribution System (WDS), RADIUS, advanced quality of service (QoS) controls for bandwidth allocation, radio output power control (with possible settings up to 251mW, which is far greater than the router's default power output) and software support for a Secure Digital card hardware modification. DD-WRT v23 SP1 was released on May 16 2006. The naming of DD-WRT v23 SP1 ('Service Pack 1') is arguably misleading, in that many new features have been added since v23. Additionally, much of the code was overhauled and rewritten during the development of this release. DD-WRT v24 is in development and currently available only in an alpha version. DD-WRT v24 will eventually allow up to 16 virtual interfaces with different SSID's and encryption protocols.
